I am giving this book 4 stars only for the exquisite photographs and the rare subject, fragrance and fragrant plants and flowers. Otherwise, it would be a solid 2 stars. The text of the book lacks depth and substance, and is a disappointing read. Included among its pages is an explanation/apology as to why the author should use Latin binomials to describe plants rather than common names (seriously? Are American gardeners that stupid?). The author’s chosen selection of fragrant plants is anything but comprehensive and includes such trite fluff as “reminders” to pay attention to USDA hardiness zones when selecting plants.For anyone looking for a much more satisfying read about fragrant plants in the garden, I would heartily suggest ‘Scent Magic’ by Isabel Bannerman which was published at the same time as Mr. Druse’s disappointing tome. Bannerman succeeds where Druse did not, in providing thoughtful, provoking essays about fragrance in the garden along with a much more useful and comprehensive approach to describing the plants and flowers of interest. Nowadays I own books on pretty much just two subjects: landscaping and perfume, so I'm just too tickled to realistically produce an objective review about a book that packs in everything I fancy. The greatest utility I can offer potential book-buyers is to direct you to The Joe Gardener podcast #126 with Ken Druse. As a perfumista, I can attest that Ken did an honest deep dive into the processes and vocabulary used in the fragrance industry, which you will pick up from the podcast.Another reason I can't be objective is because I'm already a Druse fan for his terrific treatment of my Wild Ones friends in his book The Natural Habitat Garden.Having worked in publishing for over 40 years, I've observed that, as Druse's work matured, his books have only gotten better in all regards to production value. (Honestly, one of his first books had a couple upside-down closeups, likely due to old prepress technology.) Using today's digital camera, scanning, and editing tools, Druse and Hoverkamp are treating us to wholly new views of familiar plants.
